Well by around 2009 Microsoft is planning to release Windows Vienna (AKA Windows 7)

It's being built on a Vista Kernel and has improved security and more features than Vista it self...

So should I get it?

Because theres Vista/Vienna transformation packs already released , but I can't make up my mind.

EDIT:Currently I got XP but I feel it's getting old...

Comments?

Thanks to any one who replies.

EDIT2:I changed the topic title since it's got into Vista discussion aswell.

All screenshots of Vienna will be posted on the first post.

XP is a good operating system, but Vista is better imo.
I was really skeptical in the beginning, but I own Vista for ~3 weeks now and my mind was changed during that time.
It is MicroSoft-ish, it is a pretty paranoid OS and many applications have compatibility problems (a necessity for progress), but both as a user and as a developer I have to say that the positive aspects dominate.
I would, however, not throw XP away to get a new Windows version; I'd recommend to wait until you get a new PC or to go into dual boot if you feel that you really need a new OS (remember that newer software is made for newer hardware).

I haven't found SP3 yet on the automatic updates and am willing to wait for MS make sure I've got it using that.

I am waiting for Vienna, since it seems to be more aimed in the direction I like than Vista.

Thank you both for the comments.

Although WinMin is being built in the process it's meant to use less files than your average vista machine.

And yes Underflow your correct XP is the most stable OS out there,However it's still vulnerable. Windows Vienna may get a new GUI/UI it's meant to be like 3DIsh.

You can download SP3 Manually from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

I don't think Microsoft will put it on auto updates they seem to be done with XP...

SP3 final release will be out next week. avoid downloading the current Beta. For the most part i am willing to give Vista the Skip and directly go to Windows 7. Windows 7 will be built up with performance in mind. MS is trying to make it so that it can be installed on machines like the EEE PC. There are a host of other features that make worth waiting for windows 7 like WinFS (Replacing NTFS) and for the love of god i hope the prevent default accounts from getting admin privileges from the get go. Restricted account should be norm.

I haven't used Vista, but my opinion on it is that it has some innovative features, just not the best implementation of those features. Windows Vienna should fix that and build upon that success (hopefully).

I have to admit,Vista has a nice GUI/UI but Vienna's meant to have a much neater one.

Also lets hope that Vienna turns into a success,Not just some FAILOS.

I prefer babysitting my computer over my computer babysitting me. I know what I want to do, I don't want to be warned or stopped every step of the way. Windows isn't my counsellor, it's my operating system. I want it to obey me and give me full control over my computer. None of that nannying DRM security crap.

Try telling that to Bill Gates. :D

But it would be nice if Microsoft can make another stable and trouble-free OS.

Microsoft isn't very creative. Honestly, all Window's version have looked the same since Windows 95. Oh look a recolored flashier start bar oh cool!. Not! How boring! As far as I'm concerned Windows only serves one purpose and that's playing games. Otherwise I can do everything I need on Linux. I can even play Doom 3/Quake 4 on ultra high. So don't tell me Linux can't play games... it just needs to be developed for it. I could care less for this upcoming release of Windows.

Corrected. Linux is really stable. There are several commercial OSes which can do as well or better, although probably outdated and less useful to end-users. Plus there is *BSDs.

I've used Linux for 3 years, and I've used XP for 5 years. Linux is more stable in my opinion. XP is a fine OS. I have no problems with it, and have made up-to-date installer images with Nlite -- such a cool program. Vista from heard and from what I've experienced (which is very little) has been horrible. I play with the computer's at Best Buy once in a while and oh some app has crashed like the screensaver or the sidebar thing. One time I saw the thing that reports such things and wants to restart the service or process had hung. Quite silly I think. The heard the password dialogs are annoying. More Unix like, but not really. Sudo is a fine thing, and really you don't need to be an root/super user much on Linux anyway. Installing software, editing files in /etc, and a few other things.

And the whole DRM issue is pretty much complete bullshit. I have a friend who plays and records guitar. He tried to burn his own fucking music and it wouldn't let him through WMP this was on XP. He wanted to "throw bricks and full wine bottles" at Microsoft and the RIAA in his own words.
