Hey all, just got back from working Gencon. I was lucky enough to meet the man himself Dan Abnett, and also attended his Q&A seminar. Both times, I put a few informal questions to him and got some pretty revealing inside scoops on the Heresy series and PH stuff in general.

- Legion begins two years before the Heresy. We will see undercover astartes fighting in non-standard combat armour, and indeed partially naked at times. There are apparently no less than SIX absolutely unprecedented revelations and huge plot reveals during the novel, some of which Dan was amazed that GW allowed in his proposal draft!

- All Alpha Legion astartes call themselves 'Alpharius'. This is partially out of respect for their Primarch, but then also to disguise the man himself from assassination etc, and so no one outside the legion ever really knows if they are talking to him or just a lowly line trooper. 'Alpharius' is also NOT the primarch's actual name, but rather an honourific he adopted at the founding of the legion or shortly before.

- The Emperor is not a glorious and perfect warrior. He is nearly 35,000 years old by the time of the Heresy, and his physical form is wasted away to a pathetic shell just barely animated by his indomitable psychic will. When anyone looks upon him, they see what they believe to be the physical incarnation of perfection, which is the psychic 'mask' he projects at all times. The dead body in the Golden Throne in M41 is literally exactly what he looks like PH, but when Horus breaks him he loses the ability to mask his appearance.

- EXTREME SPOILER!!! When Horus delivers the death blow to the Emperor, he is overcome with grief when he sees his true appearance for the first time in his life. In this moment of weakness, the Emperor strikes Horus down.

- Garviel Loken IS NOT DEAD. He returns "in some form" (presumably as a dreadnought) during the Heresy, and survives past the Siege of Terra
Tarik Torgaddon IS ALSO NOT DEAD. His death was staged to mask his defection to the traitors, and he will become one of the most terrible warlords of the Heresy.

- At least one of the 'missing' primarchs will be featured in the novels. There is also the possibility that the primarchs who lead the legions are NOT the originals... there were hints that some had died and been cloned.

- Dan Abnett and Graham MacNeill are the only authors who are contracted to write any further novels. He did not know whether other authors would be brought in, but he presumed so. Legion is the only novel he has written without taking 'creative breaks' - he was so into the story that he literally could not stop the ideas coming!

- There will be 20+ novels, and they will keep writing them as long as the ideas keep coming to them. Dan particularly likes the idea of having novels set *during* the Heresy which have nothing to do with the civil war, but rather just add background to the story. He hinted at Xenos-based novels where they assess the damage that Horus' defection is doing to the Imperium and decide to strike amid the confusion to claim back some of their territories conquered during the Great Crusade.

- The colour coding is decided by Black Library, not the authors. As far as Dan can see, they are indeed trying to denote chronological timelines (the red series in order deals with one specific timeline, with the green series will run similarly but not be connected chronologically to the red, etc etc) and only by reading each coloured set in order can you get the full story.

- Dan writes "cinematically", i.e. he imagines everything happening in a movie and writes what he sees in his mind. He maps out major scenes on paper to ensure there are no continuity errors.

- He finds it VERY difficult to make believable astartes characters, because they are so altered and have an entirely different outlook on life etc.

- Dan knows of no plans to make any GW movies. He has been approached regarding a proposed "Warhammer 30,000" licence based on the novels though!

Something just came up to my mind, that the emperor of humans is the most treacherous living being on materium ! every act of related to spilling blood just gives more and more power to Khorne, so what emperor done is just feeding ' his master ? ' ( ' Blood ' Ravens , ' Blood ' Angels )
Eldar is more likely the only ' good guys ' along with Tau.
We need a character which promotes the concept ' love ' to the universe of DOW to end all this war

I'm reading the "Horus Rising" novel now and I must agree, Abnett is a splendid writer.

Stupid spoilers. Now I know what happens to Garviel and Tarik. Ah well, reading Horus Rising is very interesting (to put it mildly) and I do enjoy the history of the Horus Heresy, its aftermath, and those times before the Heresy.
