After doing a quick comparison on Newegg, it seems like the 9600GT and 8800GT have the same clock speeds. But, the 9600GT has double the memory, so I would go for the 9600. Links just in case btw?

Yeah that 9600GT is the better choice between those two. Have you considered any alternatives from ATi btw?

Dont buy ATI. (You'll thank me for that later)

As for your problem, the 9600GT is the better of the 2.

I've found the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro that I've been using since last Christmas to be the best investment I've ever made in my computer. It handles far more than it says it should and on an AGP 8X slot I find its performance nothing short of extraordinary. I've never had driver problems and no game has had issues running it. Moreover I've found Catalyst Control Centre extremely useful for customising game settings (when taking screenshots or ensuring performance for example). I can't understand how you wouldn't even consider an ATI card, especially when the HD4850 is perhaps the best 'bang for buck' the market has seen in recent years.

A world in which leaders respect the rights of their people, and nations seek peace, not destruction or domination. And neither we nor anyone else should live in fear ever again." - Wesley Clark

The last two Nvidias I got were quite deceiving in their performance. The only plus NVidia has for me is better support for Linux. However their latest 4000 series of cards is likely to puill me away from the great green giant. In fact, I intend to build a PC on the AMD Dragon platform by the end of the summer.
