Wasn't it something about the backup generators being placed in a pair of...what's the word? Holes? So that when the water flooded the facility, the backup generators where amongst the first things to shut down.
The Fukushima plant was protected by a 7M high seawall, the wave that hit it was 14M.
@Nuker, I would also be interested in that subject, may be worth starting a topic on it perhaps? Although if you want to keep your views relatively private thats understandable.

@Everyone: If you wish to know my reasoning for posting "Less the Mayans, and more the Bible", send me a PM, rather than posting in this thread. I realize that everyone was not asking me about my views, however, I would like to keep this thread about Japan and the disasters that have befallen that nation as of late. Thank you.

A 7.1 quake has hit Japan, and this, roughly a month after the 9.0 quake and tsunami. There was a warning for a 3ft. tsunami, but that has since been canceled. 150,000 people have been displaced and 158,000 people are without power.

Japan's good to handle quakes, I'm sure Japan isn't affected. No more huge torrents of black water is all I wish for.

I have trouble calling a quake that happens a month after the initial quake an "aftershock". It's an earthquake.
Japan may be built to take the effects of a quake, but after a while, quakes begin to take their toll.

Last time I checked yes, I read somewhere the temperature is at 244c, they need to bring it down below 100c for a cold shutdown.
On the note of aftershocks, an aftershock is of course an earthquake so It's both, however unless the aftershock exceeds the initial earthquakes magnitude it is technically an aftershock. An aftershock with a larger magnitude would have to originate from a different fault system as the main Tohoku one is now on recharge.

Also interesting to note (from wikipedia):
"Aftershocks on the San Andreas are now believed to top out at 10 years while earthquakes in New Madrid are considered aftershocks nearly 200 years after the 1812 New Madrid earthquake."
Japan's cabinet secretary also apologized that the government raised the level from 5 to 7, saying that the potential health risks are nowhere even close to those seen in Chernobyl's accident. Apparently the amount of radioactive materials released from the nuke plant is estimated to be about 10% of the amount released in the Chernobyl accident.

AJ is responsible for this signature masterpiece... if you see him, tell him I say thanks.

That's 9.7 million people displaced, and it is definitely not a small area be it an island or a continent.

Be that as it may, the radiation is in some of the water supply and, to my knowledge, Japan is still urging its people to monitor food, for fear it might be contaminated.

Correct, which is why It's silly that the practical non-event of Fukushima is still dominating headlines over the Tsunami, news has moved on from that by now pretty much. Royal wedding is coming up and despite the fact that a majority couldn't give a flying shit, the media keeps treating it like we all care, they did a survey, it's actually about 20%.

Same here in Denmark, instead of updates on Libya and Japan, we get the constant "What will the Royal Twins be named?" I mean, we need something small and "hyggeligt" in the middle of all this war and death. But they're overplaying it in the extreme.
Anyway, I think they'll be named Maria and Muhammed.
