AllStarZ's Photo AllStarZ 11 Mar 2011

Looking at footage on youtube, and I see houses on fire being swept along the wave.

Coincidently, a large earthquake also happened in China. I assume they are linked to each other, or one caused the other.

Wow you guys are fast, you're pretty real-time when it comes to this.

Hang on, this better be on the other forums or I'm calling them slow. It's all over the PH News.

Toll is up to 32, probably at least 100 confirmed injured or more.

Nope.

Aus and NZ are now off the list since we're pretty much shielded by PNG.

Don't forget Oregon and Alaska.

As a side note, add Guam in to the "mix" as under the tsunami watch.

Yeah, watching Hawaii's feeds. Some have reported 2-meter surges, Pearl Harbor has a 50-cm surge.

IIRC Japan found a hundred or two hundred bodies somewhere...

If the death toll stays under 1000 I would be very suprised, 8.9 richter is seriously powerful and although Japan is ideally equipped to deal with earthquakes you cannot protect against a Tsunami nearly as well. Some of my lecturers had to take calls about the earthquake today, it was quite interesting.

Hit a thousand. Only likely to climb even higher in the next few days or hours.

Oh my, that's terrible D:

Heard about the earthquake around 11 hours ago(roughly 6 AM here) and was horrified by it. I heard someone say that 8.9 was the highest Japan has ever recorded.
Quote

Sgt. Rho's Photo Sgt. Rho 11 Mar 2011

I think it was indeed one of the worst ever recorded globally.
Quote

CoLT's Photo CoLT 12 Mar 2011

I'm not entirely certain that 8.9 is the highest ever globally, but in Japan if I'm not wrong it is.

I saw this on sky and bbc news this morning and just saw the whirlpool video on youtube. It's absolutely incredible how much damage was cause in such a short space of time. Sadly, I don't think the death toll is going to stop at 1000. More dead will continue to be found as the hours go by, it's really such a tragedy.
Quote

Sgt. Rho's Photo Sgt. Rho 12 Mar 2011

The highest globaly I think was 9.1. I however said "one of the worst", not "the worst".
Quote

Raven's Photo Raven 12 Mar 2011

Highest I think was the one that caused the Indian Ocean Tsunami. It was 9.x if my memory is correct.

4 Trains and one ship are uncounted for so far. I really do feel for those people. My country was also hit during the 2004 badly. But this seem to have hit more denser population centers. I hope that the death toll would be less than ours. I really do hope so. Its terrible.

------------

btw do we have any affected members?

Yeah it shifted the Earth's axis by 25 centimeters. Jesus. :D

Any - minor and major alike - Earthquake shifts the Earth' axis a bit. To be honest. Even when you take a dump you minimally change the axis of the planet :D
