It must be absolutely horrific to have your world literally destroyed around you, my heart goes out to all those poor people in Japan who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami disasters.

Don't you just love idiots like these? They seemed to forgot that their 'great' country did some much worse things afterwards to Japan (dropping 2 nukes, killing, no wait, evaporating thousands of people). Another reason why most of the world thinks America only has idiots as population.
This, of course, is very wrong, but with dozens of idiots like these it's hard to get away from that stereotype...

Seriously, does this have to be a "Hate on America" topic? It has absolutely nothing to do with America. Those posting "Payback for Pearl Harbor" and the like? They can piss right off. We don't need your clarification as to why this reflects negatively upon us.

That said, this is a terrible event that could have gone worse. I pray for those that have been hurt and will be hurt by this event, but I, for one, am thankful that the circumstances did not result in an even more catastrophic scenario.

I also agree Ion, I think that the minimal damage or radiation effects from such a huge disaster is pretty remarkable. It's certainly a testament to Japanese engineering, especially with most of the buildings in Japan surviving such an earthquake.

As Boidy said, don't extrapolate the extreme views of these tards to the rest of America. There are assholes in every country that think this incident happened for a reason.

Interesting to note though, that the majority of those facebook posts were made by middle-aged men.

Things continue to get worse for the Japanese. The nation is being rocked by after-shocks with fairly heady Richter readings. The most recent registering 6.0.

There is a bit of light to this all though. A 78 year old man was found underneath some rubble after having been there for 4 days. He was found alive.

I'm very sure that any American history book designed for school teaching does contain more words on Pearl Harbour than it does on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki afterwards. Thats just the way it goes. Similarly, in my history book the Dutch tradition of being major slavers is always mentioned, but never really fleshed out at all.

American patriotism for History is much stronger. When people who do not want to read about America's wrong doings read (or in many cases, don't) stuff that tries to hide these wrong doings, you get shit like this.

- Pressure inside pressure vessel increases due to the water surrounding the reactor core heating up.
- Steam deliberately released from pressure vessel through pressure release valves in order to preserve integrity of pressure vessel.
- Radioactive N-16 and noble gases exit pressure vessel along with steam. Half lives of radioactive material no more than a few seconds.
- Water level falls below level of fuel rods (briefly), causing coating around fuel rods to be damaged (very slightly).
- By-products of Uranium decay (radioactive isotopes of Iodine and Cesium) begin to mix with the steam in VERY small quantities (although the temperature is still too low for the Uranium to melt).
- Iodine and Cesium released along with steam, in tiny quantities. As the article author puts it, "If you were sitting on top of the plants’ chimney when they were venting, you should probably give up smoking to return to your former life expectancy." In any case, these decay products will have been carried out to sea, far from humans.
- Detection of Cesium and Iodine causes engineers to change to plan B: since distilled water cannot be added to reactor fast enough to keep water level above fuel rods, sea water is used to cool reactor instead. At this point the danger of a melt down passes.
- The sea water used to cool the reactor will be slightly radioactive, but this is contained in the reactor and can be processed and disposed of safely.

It seems I was very wrong about this. I've heard rumours that this article was a bit of astroturfing by people in the nuclear industry, and it seems that Dr Josef Oehmen is not all he seems. Since posting that, the situation has definitely become more dangerous. According to the BBC, radiation in the surrounding area has started to reach dangerous levels.

So far it's been (according to TV) the 7th level nuclear plant catastrophe, Chernobyl was the 8th level. And Germany has reacted with switching off 7 of their oldest nuclear PPs which resulted in growth of the electricity price by 1800%... at least on the stock markets. Like there was any unstable ground threatening to damage them. During the worst time (2012) of the economic crisis.

That's a great example, imo, of what NOT to do. Turning off nuclear power plants will simply feed the media frenzy on the danger of nuclear power, as well as force conventional energy power plants (coal, natural gas, etc.) to work overtime, causing more pollution. Yeehaw.
