I thought this one would be worth its own thread. It's basically 2 underclocked GTX680's in one, at the price of 2 GTX680s. With a bit of overclocking you could probably get it to full GTX680 performance. Costs 999$, so twice as much as a GTX680, will be available on May 3 in limited numbers, and on 7th or 8th I think in larger quantities. It also has 10 power phases instead of 2x4, 8 on 2 GTX680s.

Short: Overkill. I'd probably go for 2 GTX680s, since I could OC 2 GTX680s further than one GTX690.

In the words of a reasonable person: either option is a waste of money.

For a normal consumer, yes. Not for an enthusiast. It's kinda like asking someone who owns a Bugatti Veyron "That much money just to get from A to B?".

The difference here is a Bugatti Veyron lasts more than 18 months, and will keep at least most of its value.

That card will be worth $300 in 2 years time. Nice investment, when you can get 80% of the performance for less than 50% of the price for a cheaper card.

You're missing my point. My point is: To a non-enthusiast, buying enthusiast level stuff seems ridiculous, while it does't at all to an enthusiast.

I get your point perfectly, I am an audio 'enthusiast', so to say. However - my point still applies. Audio equipment goes obsolete in a number of decades, so like cars, it is a much more sound investment (haha, take that pun, Wiz).

Anyone who pays release price for a video card isn't very smart with their money.

However, if you're going to wait 2 years for the prices to drop, technology will have evolved a lot by then and your newly bought GPU will be worthless... That's the problem with compuer tech, it evolves too fast for anything to be worth its prices 2 years later :/

Not really. I usually buy the highest or second-highest rated in the previous generation. Once the newer generation is out, the price drops by about 30-40%. I've been running a 5870 for since the 6xxx series and I've been able to run everything perfectly.

Far more effective to buy things after they drop in price but before they go obsolete. Video cards aren't a valid enough investment to buy upfront. What benefit do you get from buying a video card that is worth more than all of the other parts in your computer combined?

The price... I want a new STAX amp instead.

On the other hand, with the better efficiency, the dual GPU card might sound a little bit more acceptable than a hairdryer?

Still running a second hand GTX470, crappy as hell but runs everything I needed at max.

It's supposed to be very silent. We'll have to wait for some reviews I guess.

interesting...I am looking to upgrade myself for sometime now. Apart from BF3.. I managed to play all recent game on highest settings with AA set to 2X on my 275 GTX. Managed to play the BF3 campaign on highest setting still, but had regular stutters.

I don't think a non-enthusiast would understand the value of something like 690. It would always seem to ridiculous to them.

Not sure if the 275GTX supports FXAA. If it does, try out the new beta driver. No need for any FXAA injector every game now, and can be set in the driver panel. FXAA works well on most my games, except MWLL which the distance is too great, longer range (900m+ combat) is blurred. Most games don't have engagement range like that.

With a 690 you might want to upgrade you CPU as well, maybe even the Motherboard. I'd imagine it would bottleneck if you don't have a good CPU as well. And without PCI-E 3.0 you don't get it to full potential. If you spend 1 grand on a graphics card, it shouldn't be much of an issue I think :P

Seeing that on the HD7970, PCI-E 3.0 made no difference what so ever. I doubt the performance increase on the 690 will be very noticeable, if any.

Well, tbh, my GTX 570 runs everything like a dream, so no need for one of these just yet methinks! In other news, Alias, that was one of the worst puns I have ever had the misfortune to read, ever. D8

Yep..I need upgrade my entire rig. I think even in the case of BF3, the main reason for stuttering is my CPU rather than the GPU. E6600 is really outdated. I'm holding back cos I need to change mobo and RAM also. I was eyeing a 570GTX which was available for cheap in the local classifieds, but didn't want to commit to it till I upgrade the other stuff.
