It might be your favourite game but it sure as hell had nothing to do with GTA.

Vice City ALMOST managed. Good game, but it was starting to lose its grip, and the 3rd person perspective basically made proper GTA gameplay impossible.

It did nothing 2 did, that's the point.

GTA is at heart an open-world game where you go nuts and wreak as much havoc as humanly possible in a very short time frame. It's a game that needs no manual or tutorial, and you're not bound by rules or anything like that. You hop in a tank and shoot up the whole town until the FBI and army drag you out, or molotov a town square until the car wrecks clog up the whole screen. It's a fast-action game where anything and everything goes, and you can go on a rampage from the first second the game starts. And you get paid money for destroying stuff and killing people!

San Andreas is the opposite of all that, it's a strictly regulated semi-life-sim game that greatly limits your choices and makes you do completely irrelevant stuff like going to macdonalds, going to the gym, going on dates, buying properties, going to the hairdresser, get tailored, you even have to defend your neighbourhoods from time to time. It's basically the open world equivalent of Mario Goes Shopping, it couldn't be further from GTA if it tried! A true GTA game would never tell you to do stupid boring stuff like that. Well GTA V introduced a super long on-rails tutorial, that was an even bigger bit of blasphemy, but you get my point.

San Andreas itself as a game is also highly culpable as first of all it resets all your hard-won progress halfway through with no warning, and then it throws a plane flying tutorial at you with such hideous controls that I've never managed to complete it.

Well, then Destroy All Humans is a true GTA game But i get what you mean. I enjoyed GTA 2 a lot back then but would not play it now.

GTA 2 was also super fun in multiplayer. It was super chaotic and full of mayhem.

I played GTA 4 multiplayer for a while and it was fun. It depends on what kind of people you are matched up with though.
