At this level of the sport, is the real qualification just sheer disrespect for one's life?

You might be on to something...

I think games, and specifically RTS games, might be quite hard to create.

What is it exactly that you're looking for? Other than just, you know, Generals.

Art style and unit design seem to be even more important for rts games.

Red Alert 2 and Generals, even Tiberium Wars had perfect unit design. Distinct, easy to read, fun.

That's fair.

To be honest I really like the Tiberian universe and visually it's a lot closer to that than Generals, or even Red Alert. Though it definitely also has RA elements.

So far I like it. Not blown away or anything, but a fun playthrough. Don't know how good skirmish is gonna be but I haven't seen that many of the units and stuff yet of course.

Indeedely do. Although I feel like Tempest Rising is kinda eclipsing other RTS games that are coming out.

That said there are a whole bunch more I want to try, including Endeavor, which is already out.

This one? What appeals about it? I think it looks a bit uninspired.

I feel like we need an open source engine that has the basis for a good game that people can put the creative overlay on the top. A bit like how Unreal engine allows for action/fps games to at least have a base to build upon. All these developers have to spend so much time recreating the mechanical elements of RTS games that they never get time to make a good game.

Yeah that one. It looks a little bit like a midpoint between BAR and C&C.

As for the engine, I'd say BAR's is quite good. It can handle tens of thousands of units on the map without any lag. For more C&C-style games, maybe there should be another one. Although I don't see why Unity or Unreal wouldn't work Oo .

The BAR engine is quite old now and is likely to be very geared towards Total Annihilation type games.

Unity and Unreal aren't created with the complexities of RTS games in mind, and from my quick half an hour of research, some devs use Unity or Unreal but then design another engine to work along side it to deal with navmesh/pathfinding/simulation stuff.
