We thought, for decades, we had a deep state in Turkey which prevented from islamists ever taking over. A guy with weird moustache (WHY THEY ALWAYS HAVE WEIRD MOUSTACHES!?) came and destroyed secular system and currently on the path to establish islamic state. It is always the will of the people, not some hidden powers or something.

It is the will of the majority of the people to keep those people in power. Look Turkey, Erdoğan, while may act like a dictator, actually gets his power from his supporters. Which is around %50 of the people, people keep making such men stronger and stronger until a point where he gets so strong and controls so much power, they cannot remove him with democratic processes anymore.
