The film is so massive that imax camera rolls can only hold three minutes of film. The cost of film is also huge, it's 3.4 times as big as regular 70 mm film, so every second is expensive, around $10 per metre.

That's not counting the cost of developing it, which very few labs in the world can do. Or scanning it. doing the process again in reverse after post.

The camera itself also costs $16k per week to rent, not including the lenses, equipment, rigging, etc. It's obscenely expensive.
