AMD Athlon-64 3200+
MSI nForce 3 Motherboard
2GB DRR400 RAM
ATi Radeon X700 Pro AGP
Creative Labs X-fi
SATA-I 300GB HDD
My next machine plans for the future, with the idea of hopefully playing C&C3 at maximum with no slowdown...
Core 2 Duo E6600 or E6700
ASUS nForce 5 motherboard
4GB DDR-800
GeForce 8-series (high-end)
Creative Labs X-fi
SATA-II 600GB RAID-0 HDD
I pray I can afford that, and that it'll actually run C&C3 at full detail, max resolution, and no slowdown (with the maximum number of hard AIs in skirmish, and with a nicely detailed map). It's just a plan, so things may change.
Oh great, in lieu of a parachute, here's a hanky!

The Core 2 Duo E6600 isn't that expensive, but it'll still beat an FX-62! It's $320 or so for groups of $1000, expected per unit price is just over $400 (I think, not certain). Impressive! The motherboard will likely be around $150, if it's anything near the AMD nForce5 boards.
The X-fi and one of the SATA-II HDDs are already aquired. The PSU will likely run about $100, the case about $200. The RAM should be about $260 for 2GB. Graphics card, $400. The other HDD, $100.
So, that's roughly $1600, plus shipping. Hopefully the selling of stuff will net me at least $800, preferably $1000. If I manage to get $1100 in sales I'll get the 4GB of RAM right off the bat!
I also plan on adding a TV Tuner card, but that's in a separate budget and will also go into my current machine before I get the new one.
-------
The Radeon 9800 will run it, but not very quickly. You'll likely be at minimum settings. Also, I and several others I know have had 9800s fail on us. The fan siezes up. Be warned!

PCI
AGP
PCI-Express x16
If all you have are PCI slots (no AGP or PCI-E), give up now and get a new computer. They simply lack the bandwidth to process modern graphics, and graphics cards are no longer made for these slots. They are still useful for sound cards, physics cards, wireless cards, TV tuners, etc. In other words, they've still got a lot of useful things for them, just not graphics.
AGP is still servicable, but barely. What cards you will find will be overpriced compared to PCI-E cards, and significantly underpowered, too. Consider upgrading or getting a new computer soon, as AGP won't be around that much longer, and for good reason. It was great in it's time, but is quite slow compared to PCI-E.
PCI-E x16 is the way to go. (Note that PCI-X is something different and only really found on servers and high-end workstations. Avoid these if you're a gamer, there's no point to them.) By far, PCI-E x16 offers the best bandwidth and is the best solution for gaming graphics on the market today. Some systems even have twin x16 slots for running two cards at once. For nVIDIA cards, this is known as SLI. For ATi, it's called Crossfire. Motherboards will only support one or the other (or neither). Be certain to read up on which if you want to use this feature.
With current graphics cards, an nVIDIA GeForce 7600 or ATi Radeon X1600 (PCI-Express x16, naturally) is recommended. They aren't too horribly expensive, but are still plenty powerful and will run any of today's games.

It ran Generals with it below the rec requirements... I can run HL2 on it with 50-55 fps

Something is supernatural about my 933mhz processor

The thing I don't have is the hard disk space

256mb 266mhz DDR ram that cant updated because i cant find an older module compatible with my motherboard
Geforce FX5200 128mb which is a budget card and just barely lets you run stuff.
a 40 and one 80 GB hard drive.
Well this is my crap comp.
Just waiting for my acer Ferrari Laptop to arrive soon. Sure it wont run everything on high specs bit it will be a vast improvement over my current specs.

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 at 2.40GHz
RAM: 1,536MB DDR SDRAM PC2100
Video: Sapphire ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB AGP
Oh, and an 80GB hard drive. Space isn't an issue for that. I know Zero Hour isn't the greatest looking game but I can run it on high detail, with everything enabled, full particles and all. Also my card is set to have AA and AF on. So for as crappy as the Sage engine is for Zero Hour, it doesn't look half bad.
