I think America bashing should really be on the way out by now, especially compared to Europe, sometimes I find myself wanting to "y'all".

We sat by and let the ethnic cleansing of Muslims happen in Serbia until the US forced something through the UN, men of the US died protecting the Islamic faith, no-one remembers this, not a single bloody person and now they are seen as the great enemy, by everyone. Tell me this is right!

Right nukes aren't a good thing, but they propped up the UK for 30 years and stopped us beign over a barrel to the Middle East or the Russians which is bloody useful, and tbh we need to build a new set of reactors for the same reason.

Not to start politics here, but:
-Who was the first (and ONLY) country to use an offensive nuclear weapon?
-Not to forget they force upon other nations to abandon their nuclear weapons but they keep stockpiling their own? Come on.
-Who invades other countries for no other reason but oil?

Don't get me started at how the US funded Al-Qaeda and similar "terrorist" groups in the Gulf War... 90%+ of what they do is for their own benefit as a nation, not to the world as a whole...

Back to the Nuclear topic... take Chernobyl for example... yes, reactors may be safe these days, they may never have a meltdown in a perfect world... but we don't live in a perfect world. Human error has and will always exist, therefore no matter how safe something is said to be, it's nothing more than a false assurance.

Don't get me started on the waste here.

what is wrong with nuclear weapons they are just weapons like anything else, aimed at killing people, just because nuclear weapons are effective at killing people doesnt mean they should be blamed, I mean wats next blaming guns, or knives or sticks, they are all weapons too, just not as good at killing. I mean c'mon

Also remember its not nukes that kill people its people who kill people.

Alias your green views would bring a halt to humanity, there was an accident generating power, yes people died, heroes who had no radiation suits pours water on a reactor for 2 hours and then died. It was horrific.

Should we have banned fire because someone got burned?

Except for the fact fire is essential (for correct use), and nuclear power is not (not to mention tons safer, yes there is still a risk... but there's a risk with everything these days).

there are alot of those views at sydney uni, nearly ever second, stall is a save the whales, stop nuclear, blah blah blah. They will eventaully grow out of it anyway.

I mean personally I wasnt a hippy, but the people I knew were (reffering to when I whent to uni), and strong hippies too, but they eventually grew out of it, an are now almost industrialists :)

Any-who, personally I think nuclear energy and everything nuclear are a godsend, I mean so what if a few hundren thousand people die, they die to help the other billions. example

bombs on hiroshima and nagasaki: pros

showed harfull efect of radiation on humans
allowed for callibration of bombs and future missles
allowed for the developement of radiation resistant and radioation removing items
advancements in nuclear medicine
etc.

and thats just from the nuclear bombs, theres tons of other stuuf from nuclear power plants, and everything else nuclear.

Oh, sorry.
Was that nerve gas I just emptied into the New York Subway?

I'm terribly sorry and all, they died for a good cause, you know - finding out if this new cure works. Sadly it didn't, but they died helping the billions in the future because we know now that this new drug doesn't work. Time to try the other 138 drugs we've got into testing.

NO AMOUNT OF DEATH IS GOOD.

Note that every SINGLE person of that however many hundred-thousand had family... all those children, they had a future. But, their lives don't matter because they died for a good cause. Spare me before I throw up.

Sadly not.

If everyone was an industrialist the world would've ended decades ago.

IMO I dont think so, I think that it is the tree hugers, and similar who are slowing us down.

I assume that you are not a big fan of embryonic stem cells?

I actaully have this radical idea I have been proposing to my fellow staff, get this, embryo factories:

You make a factory that produces cloned embryos form clones eggs and sperm, fertilises them, wait a few weeks (continuely fertilising eggs as you wait), place embryos on convery belt, kill embryos for stem cells, have a contiunous flow of stem cells (since by the time the first ones a kiled since you have been producing million while you wait their is a production line)

these stems cells can cure millions of diseases, prolong life, help the elderly, and young, millions of possibilities.

I'm against embryonic stem cells, yes. But not against adult stem cells, as you don't have to slaughter a potential human in order get the cells.

Not to mention adult stem cells have been proven to work, whereas embryonic stem cells have only been predicted to work.

embryonic stems cells have only been predicted to work because hippies who are in some sort of power prevent scientist to use them for it is "ethically wrong" dam panzies, and look now we have a dam extremist environmentalist in the australian administration. I am all for Labour, Kevin 07, but that was the only let down. Now embryonic stem cells will again be put off unable to used. See if we were able to use them it would be proven that they are a million times over better than adult ones.

Hell adualt ones arent proven to work, they work under very strick conditions, where as another adv. of embryonic is there ability to work under almost any conditions. Dam hippy panzies slow down the human race again.

I don't like Hippies either. But if being an enviromentalist and a pacifist means slowing down when the human race is about to hit a concrete wall at 400 kilometers per second because people are in fact too lazy and greedy I say they are a lesser evil in this world.

Adult ones have had successful tests with real humans, where embryonic stem cells haven't even had success in lab conditions.

Are we not getting off topic somewhat? Embryonic research and the benefits of hippies with Nukes?!?

The end of the human race will occur, no doubt, when the end of reason takes hold. You can see it presently. Middle Eastern conflict over "religious" territitory. It's non-sense. We want your oil, or to control how much you sell it for! This will be our downfall. The lack of resources will see an escalation in international bravado, resulting in a conflict that will end us all, because for the looser, there will be nothing left and the winner will get only the scraps as the bulk of our resources will be used to fight the damn thing.

Rich countries will genetically modify their offspiring to beings that know all the secrets of life but cant explain it.

I do see a grim future for humanity though. The earth as just one city, and everyone living in a tube with their brains hooked upto a computer, being kept alive forever in some virtual reality shit.

It's not really a question of how or with what, alot of you guys a keen on nukes. It's really a question of when and it will probably a ooops by somebody. I'm not talking about oops I pressed the red button, but perhaps an attempt to create an effiecient source of power that would manage to destroy that atmosphere in a oh sh** moment. Or maybe we don't manage to destroy ourselves maybe we encounter an alien race and piss them off so much that they do it for us. Or maybe a rogue commet or asteroid, we need not worry about these things because eventually it will happen and debating this on and on will not bring it closer or distince us from what some people deem innevitable. Just enjoy life, adopt a kitten, whatever, unless you are evil like Boidy try to take over the world, that would make you happy.

I agree with Kirkov, asteroid or a scientific error - an Oh Shi- moment as you put it nicely - will probably be the cause of our demise. The nuclear holocaust still requires TWO super powers to be in involved and aliens would probably study us and come to the conclusion that we're bloody stupid and move on...or kill us for the fun of it. The scientific error idea reminded me of something I've heard some time ago, not sure if it's true, but I heard that before testing the first atomic bomb, some scientists thought that it might cause the atmosphere to combust. It didn't happen obviously but who knows about the unexpected side effects of future power sources?

Alien life kills us? We have a speicies willing to spend 10 years (minimum) in a naer to light speed craft just to do something that we can do ourselves and even if we don't the sun will do for us? Well they won't be intelligent life. Possibly green.

Corrino is right about how people age, it's a fact I've studied in detail. When you are young and have nothing, you want everyone to share - Socialism/Communism. As you age and aquire goods this goodwill wanes - Centre ground. As you age to the fullest extent, everyone else is an illegal alien in your not outdated world - Extreme right.

Now this is just a simple model, people sometimes can figure the left wing was won't work by the age of 17, others wait until their 60's before the brain fires up.

I know ex hippies, I know a Maoist ffs, the Maoist for the last 20 years has worked for the Inland Revenue (IRS UK equilivent).

I don't think the US will bring about the end of the world, but I hope we go out in an oh SH- moment, because at least that way we're still human, we're still trying something new, not stagnating in trees. Trial and error, one of the best achivements of our race, but now everyone is scared of error and soon we'll sit in the dark and be scared of shadows once again.

That is a massive generalisation, to be honest.

If (according to you), the "only" leftists are all that are below 25 (at this age, they "have no say"), then what is this "preventative force" that is stopping the research of all these things you are on about?

Industrialism will be the end of the earth.

I agree, (look we agree on something, no hard feeling about the debate rite, just a good swaping on opinions)

I am 44 and I am a left wing, I vote labour (australian left party), I may not be an extreme left wing were I want to save the rainforest, and the whales, and etc.

but I strongly beleive in equality and respect beside gender or race, better rites for the working force, more union power, and the other excellent polices the left wing support.

So yes that is a pretty big generalisation.

p.s. You can still be a left wing industrialist. Just not an extremist industrialist.

Well we are now wholly moving off topic. @ bold text. I am right wing. I believe in free market economy and a strong military, and the government keeping their noses out of my affairs, but that doesn't mean that I don't believe in equality for everyone. Atm I do disagree that in British society some are more equal than others and get more hand outs. I mean, come here with nothing and get it all for free. Born here and work your arse off you get it taxed away.

@ Topic - Dauth, given the fact that Alien life is indeed, Alien, do you not truck with mere notion that they may have a technological understanding and superiority beyond YOUR studies of physics? As unlikely as it may seem do you completely deny the notion that there are things out there that you do not yet know about? Ie Aliens with the capability to get here in hours from billions of light years away and vapourise in a instant the second they realise we are an inferior species, probably after arriving in orbit between 11:00 and 14:00 GMT and picking up some really crappy English daytime TV! Is this such an impossible notion?
