International collaboration of scientists, actually. I've been to a lot of university open days recently, and a few of the (British) professors giving presentations fly off to Geneva every week or so to work there.

I may not not know very much about physics, but I trust these guys with what their doing. They're not only scientists, but Swiss as well and you can't go wrong with that :P .

*Looks at Manchester Particle Physics Group* yup very Swiss, you know we try to keep as much of the delicate stuff out of Switzerland as possible to keep down costs.

I get reall mad at my friends saying that we're all going to die just because of some worthless hype, sure the experiments unsettle a lot of people, but who the hell cares? I may not know a lot about physics, but i know a little about black holes, and the force it takes to create one.

IIRC, the collision MAY IN THEORY, create TINY blackholes, that would disspate within mili-seconds

Which theory? Seriously I want to know, because this is as bad as 'They said' now.

I read it somwhere

Where? Some red top newspaper by any chance?

no idea whatsoever
oh and by the way, i was just saying, i dont actually belive it.
You almost did, didn't you?

Ok, I'm freaked out about the whole 2% chance a black hole will swallow the whole Earth, is that true?

I'm aware how wrong I was about who is working on it, but I do believe they know what they're doing.

Until I find out that it IS gonna form, I'm gonna do what Peter did in family guy, hide in basement with space suits and brace for the end of the world.

[trivia]Those were hazmat suits.

(Did anybody notice that the two headed cows briefly visible in that episode looked suspiciously like brahmin?)[/trivia]

GET THIS THROUGH YOUR HEAD:

If YOU KNEW ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING ABOUT PHYSICS, YOU'D KNOW THERE WILL BE NO BLACKHOLES.

All the hysteria about black holes is really getting on my nerves. When they fired up the LHC for a mere test run a few days ago, all news channels made it look as if they were intentionally going to create a black hole at that very day. Most people don't even know what the LHC actually is and that was the first time they ever heard about it. It's madness: The first thing these ignorant fools heard was that there "will" be a black hole and everyone's going to die. Personally, I'm not afraid of what might happen. Sure, it's never been done before and there's no absolute certainty but these scientists are probably the smartest people on the planet. Even IF they create a black hole that poses a threat for some magical reason, it doesn't scare me in the slightest. Years of cynical pessimism helped me learn to stop worrying and love the LHC. Death through black hole is probably the most epic way to kick the bucket anyway.

They didn't even do a collision yet. They just made a few rounds with protons or something only in one direction.

So even if there would be the chance of a black hole that occasio hasn't been, or has it?

I hope they don't count down to their first collision. That will help to shut those apocalpyse apocs and their stupid theories.

I heard that the LHC will be run in full power not before December.

Then they get overboard. Then we get our arses pwned by aliens. Then Gordon Freeman. :P

What annoys me most is that people bang on about it costing several billion for the whole thing, and people dont realise that MORE than this is spent on Iraq and Afghanistan every day.
A work in progress, leave me alone.

They complain about that because it's science and most people simply don't care about science anymore which is as sad as it is alarming.

If the LHC is a threat the aliens should have closed it down right now, like what happened in 1945-1970 when they shut down several ICBM Missiles in the US and Russia and prevented the Cold War.
