After a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen at 10:36 a.m. indicating that the protons had traveled the full length of the $3.8 billion Large Hadron Collider.

A lot of fuss for a dot. I could make a dot appear on a computer screen using power point :fail

I laugh at and hate those who don't like the Hadron particle collider because of some stupid theory the world will end.

I personally not only want it activated, I also believe this to be one of the greatest things ever  .

Of course the world won't end; We've already sent him a crobar.

Humanity's gonna be fine~

That's great, now maybe people will stop with the doomsday speak  .

So, until December, they'll not recreate the seconds after the big bang?
Then, there's when they can create the blackholes, no?

Last thing I heard was that collision experiments were scheduled for the 21st of October.

You really have no idea do you? They aren't making blackholes that's just stupid people in the media.

Correction, stupid and narrow minded.

To be honest today was a lot of hype, mainly permiated by dumb newspapers types. AFIAK they were testing the ability to send the particles around the full circuit, NOT colliding them. The end of the world can wait a while longer so I have longer to moan at Dauth about his "type" being the downfall of the world

IIRC, the collision MAY IN THEORY, create TINY blackholes, that would disspate within mili-seconds
You almost did, didn't you?

Which theory? Seriously I want to know, because this is as bad as 'They said' now.

Let's have a bet. If we survive the first collision, you give me ten quid. If we get sucked into a black hole and die horribly, I'll give you ten quid.

If and i repeat IF they do end the world, why are we all worried? It's not like you'll see your doom encroaching right? Wouldn't everything just disappear so suddenly into energy? I say bring it on. If experiments like these aren't carried out we'll never get to the bottom of how and maybe why the universe came to exist.

Done. Leave it under my door if I'm right

Seriously we are making a lot of fuss over something that has absolutely no real impact on our lives, or will likely our kids lives.

Hhhmmmm... are you sure about that? Because I recently read a news about a teenage girl in India has killed herself after fearing the LHC experiment in Switzerland may cause the world to end.

But that's her own fault, not the fault of the machine.

While that is indeed very tragic, it is also very stupid. The people who built this machine are so clever that it would take any member here at least a decade to have a clue what they are going on about. I have spent 4 years studying Physics at one of the best Universities in the UK and I still don't know anywhere near enough about the LHC.

I have another, more creative theory. Remember Star Trek where the Vulcans contact Earth after Zefram Chochrane successfully finished the first warp-flight? The star fleet has this directive which dictates that contact may only be made with civilisations who developed warp technology because they are expected to be smart enough to understand the mysteries of space. Maybe this isn't as fictitious as it seems. Maybe an alien race can detect the enormous energy set free by an actual collision experiment and come to visit us to see if we're ready for ther intergalactic development programme. It sounds far-fetched but what would YOU do if you were an alien interested in other species? You need to set a standard which defines what civilisation is worthy enough to meet you. And what kind of standard can apply for the whole universe? Ethics? Arts? No, science. Recreating the big bang is quite an achievement if you ask me. This does not necessarily mean that they will land here and contact us on October the 22nd, but I'd be a little gobsmacked if there'd be sudden u.f.o. sightings getting reported after the experiment. Just a thought.

How is this "alien species" supposed to be able to differentiate between the energies of the collisions in the accelerator (14TeV) and those in the atmosphere (up to 20TeV IIRC)?

I'm no physicist and I'm not actually believing in this theory.
It's merely a scenario which I had in mind, one that is far fetched and unlikely, but still not impossible.
Even a bizarre scenario can be worth a thought or two. I'd love to see it happen, though.
