OH MY GOD THE LHC IS THE END OF THE WORLD DAMN YOU CERN WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO US!
If people did a bit of research they would realise how daft they sounded. Plus in the sun today they did an article about it talking about the "end of the world" and how it will create "hundreds of micro black holes" lol.

Why on earth do you read The Sun?

Lul i read that same article, i hope this proves something otherwise that is a whoooole lotta money down the tube

Uhh, page 3? ;)

Anyway, theres a very slight chance of one being created, and theres an even slighter chance of it staying alive, we just gotta depend on Hawking Radiation for that one!

Read http://en.wikipedia....ki/OMG_particle they hit 20TeV

CERN hits 14TeV

An Oh-My-God particle? I love it! Who says physicists don't have a sense of humour? (Actually I suppose the debate is more about the quality of the humour, which is probably rather more open to interpretation. But I digress.)
Just out of interest, how much is 20TeV in regular volts? And what exactly did hit that charge, one of the particles they created or the collider's power draw? (It's the particle, right? From what little I know of an electron volt, even 20TeV wouldn't be a drop in the ocean to what powers the LHC. But feel free to prove me wrong.)

My only comment: my sister's having an end-of-the-world party, just in case it does happen. Hey, why not?

But here's something to consider: what they're doing is basically what's been happening at the sun for ages now. Particles colliding at super-high speeds.

20 TeV is the amount of energy that one electron would have if you passed it through a potential of 20 TV (which is 20*10^12 V). It is a tiny amount of energy by human standards however what matters is the energy density and you have 20 TeV per particle. This much energy puts you at v/c = 1-10^-11. (Roughly)

I think this is the part where I nod sagely and admit that I don't really know anything about physics. Sorry.

WRONG.

It will recreate the conditions just after the big bang within the confines of a small volume. Not the entire universe.

So no they won't.

Then it has beam dumps, and it's not powerful enough to go past 14TeV, honestly I am beginning to lose patience with the distrust of science that permeates the modern world.

We need GORDON FREEMAN!

But on a more serious note, I'm willing to bet that the world does in fact not end today, since I'm a firm believer on the end of the world described in the book of Revelation.

Unless I missed the part where the world is engulfed in a man made black hole.

Personally I though this was rather a nice idea.

The LHC will synthesize an organic virus that will be targeted to people of low common sense and IQ.....

Oh.. it was just a dream.

Some people do still trust science Dauth. How on earth would smashing particles together at near the speed of light create a world eating black hole? And where has this 50 million to one chance it will end the universe come from? Or is it just some random number the idiots at the sun threw together.
