SupCom, WC2/3, Perimeter. AoE before mythology. Total war series is also very good, although you could consider that a battle sim.

Call it a Real-Time Tactical if you must, but having an absolute blast on World in Conflict last night cemented its place at the top of my favourite 'RTS' games. In its absence, Red Alert 2 introduced me to C&C and still provides massive entertainment value as well as great action and gameplay.

A world in which leaders respect the rights of their people, and nations seek peace, not destruction or domination. And neither we nor anyone else should live in fear ever again." - Wesley Clark

I'll double that offer with triple your money back. The only game I've ever played where the most abused units were TRANSPORT HELICOPTERS.

Starcraft is a classic, and I personally think everyone should play if only for the fact that you can get it for about 5 bucks and it has no DRM. Sure the graphics are lackluster, and the story... well, it's been done by everyone now. But the nods and nudges that it has in it, and that come from it, are somewhat interesting, and it's a great example of developer support.

Also, it actually has three factions that play differently. Not like the stuff from Generals, mind you, but they are fundamentally different.

RA2 gets a nod because of it's humour and relative balance, but it doesn't, for some reason, care to work particularly well with me. That's my complaint.

I'd also like to mention Dark Reign, which is a little known gem from way back. I had a compstomp with a mate ages ago, and seriously, it was great.

Only game where artillery has 3 times the range of the screen.

in particular order:
5. World in Conflict
4. Kane's Wrath
3. Command and Conquer: Genenerals/Zero Hour and some of its mods :P
2. Red Alert series
1. Real War: Rogue States (Yeah, it is in 2D, but the gameplay is almost a simulation. No unit spamming, realistic resource replenishment)

I'd be nice if you have an other option. But my favorite RTS is Act of War (for which, add it!). I think I have about 100 hours logged in that game.
