The game can run widescreen resolutions, but you have to change some parameters in the launch. See here - http://www.widescree.../wiki/SimCity_4

It might also help to run it in a lower compatability mode, though some graphics cards just take issue with the game and others don't. Switching to software usually stops this.

EDIT : Also make sure that all your graphics settings which you can set via the nvidia control panel / ATI catalyst centre are not checked to over-ride application setting, as this can cause artifacts.

Custom res and software rendering seems to have made the difference. Appreciate the assistance mate.

Glad to hear it :) Theres something really rewarding about constructing cities, I guess its the evolution of playing with lego and K-NEX as a child :)

You will probably find the game will still crash on occasion though, thats just the nature of the game so save often. Sometimes I can play for 4-6hours with no crashes, other times it crashes within 5mins of opening a city. More often the former than the latter though. Additionally, if you install NAM - Which you should :) then don't hover a puzzle piece over a transit enabled lot, as this will cause a crash 100% of the time.

Not quite a comparison shot, but more an image showing how my building style has changed. This tile is being redone entirely, I have done about half of it, but the rest remains in the older state, quite a difference from one to the other. It should be obvious but just in case, top of the city is new, bottom is old.

I must say the tree mods are so much better than the original. And the terrain. They just make the city so much more alive than plain Maxis.

Nice work Ion. I've been getting back to grips with this game now I can play it again (thanks agan btw) and I've noticed just how boring and functional my two cities are. I would point out that I have less than a 10,000 population, but I think I need to change the way I do it. My layouts leave bugger all room for anything but roads and zones :/

Personally, my central cities always are functional, to keep traffic down, etc., while the outter ones get more and more aesthetic.

I really wouldn't worry at all about that, half of my cities are still horrible but very functional :P I just don't tend to show you those as much, though overtime your "skill" if you can call it that, will increase. obviously having alot of custom content helps though. It's also worth remembering that alot of the cities you see on simtropolis aren't what they seem. Many players cheat, either by giving themselves unlimited money, turning off abandonment ect. Alot of cities are also purely plopped, with 0 actual population and will use transit spawners to give the illusion of being busy. They see Simcity as a canvas, to do what they will. I see it as a canvas within a set of rules. If I cannot follow those rules, my cities will not succeed.

Besides, to kick start region play/growth and gain access to all the range of buildings - from stage 1-8, you need about 500k population anyway.

Oh and Wiz, what tile size are you starting with? I would recommend either medium or large, the small tiles are to small to do much with.

Oh and here are some of the things I never show you, these are old as hell, but I haven't and probably won't redevelop them. I have a slope mod which severely restricts the angle I can build on currently, making 100% of this pretty much impossible. Crime, over-density, saturation of samey buildings and no attempt to be pleasing to the eye, its all here. But it is all very functional and successful from an economic POV, which at the start, is all that really matters.

The commuter belt / suburb of Kirkstone. My region has also finally passed the 25 million mark.

Normally nostalgia makes me prefer SC3K Unlimited's graphics, but with all that green you cities are just gorgeous, Ion.

Thanks for the comment. I haven't played SC4 for a while now, but I always play it in bursts before taking a hiatus then going back to it anyway.

Thanks, here is some more greeny goodness. I particularily like the abandoned/rundown industry near the raised motorway, though it's not 100% finished yet.
