8.9 Pacific Earthquake

I'm stressing the point that this quake had enough power to shift the Earth by that much. Don't act like you're not impressed.
Apparently they got some generators to the nuclear reactor that's potentially going to have a meltdown, but it's already releasing radioactive steam. Now we have to hope there's no aftershock that causes the cooling systems to go kaput.

Japan has declared a "Nuclear emergency" as one reactor's cooling system has failed: http://www.bbc.co.uk...onment-12711707
From what I've heard on the radio this morning, they've made several attempts to cool the reactor, but have unfortunately been unable to do so. :S Now whether they have made a successful attempt is beyond me, but.......today is not a good day by any stretch.

The nuclear reactor...is in meltdown.
The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) of the Ministry of Economy and Industry (MITI) has just announced that near Unit 1 of the Fukushima 1 Nuclear Power Plant, a radioactive element called "cesium," which results from nuclear fission, has been detected, so it believes that a part of the nuclear fuel at the reactor core of Unit 1 has melted down.

In a good turn of news for once, the waves were practically nonexistent when they hit the Americas and they was zero property damage in Hawaii. Same can be said for most of the pacific, with the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and the vulnerable low-lying pacific islands suffering either none or minor flooding.

One man was killed in Calif. by the tsunami when he was swept away by the waves trying to film it or something.
One of the nuclear reactors at Fukushima NPP...might have exploded. I don't think so, something else could've blown up, like steam pipes or transformers and stuff. There's reports that the frame of the building was blown off, or something about the containment structure. But I know that something DID explode, and it's billowing a LOT of smoke.

^That might've been the oil refinery you saw. Nuclear reactors don't tend to explode, since there's nothing explosive in them.

The refinery is in Chiba, the nuclear power plant's in Fukushima. The Fukushima NPP is a Boiling Water Reactor, which is perfectly capable of causing a steam explosion; white smoke, as the refinery explosion at Chiba had massive fires, heat and extreme amounts of black smoke.

...well the uranium isn't enriched, so it's not capable of going supercritical and ending in a Tsar Bomba...

Compared to what most movies/games show you, nuclear reactors aren't nuclear bombs in disguise. The worst what could happen is like Chernobyl (which is still bad of course, but not as bad as a nuke exploding).
As for the matter at hand: it seemed not so damaging at first, but when I saw the news yesterday evening it seems it was a bit more catastrophic then I suspected.

No (and anti-matter is just as non-explosive as normal matter is). A nuclear meltdown isn't a nuclear explosion - that's impossible after all. Where would the critical mass of weapons-grade material come from? A meltdown is exactly that - the material literally melting through the core and this causes a subsequent release of nuclear material into the surrounding environment and exposure of people to high doses of radiation.

It does create an ´explosion´ of some sorts due to the massive build up of pressure, which will eventually get released by destroying the outer shells of a reactor core (if those shells are not strong enough).
I also thus do not understand what exactly could have exploded, if the inner shells of the reactor core are still intact as most experts are trying to speculate based on the not-so-high levels of radiation in the environment. It is most probably a violent steam release from the reactor as they are desperately trying to pump coolant water into the reactor. If so, it is concerning because the concrete structure that blew up was probably part of the reactor and they didnt fix it up yet.

seen many vids on the nets.
man, that's terrible. skyscrapers look like UNO tower on unstable table.
glad the big tsunami wave appears not reach northern Indonesia region such as Malacca and Sulawesi.

I just saw on the news that there has been an explosion in the nuclear reactor, and there is a leak of Radiation from there. This is very bad news.

From what I hear, the radiation leak was extremely limited as the container was not damaged by the explosion. That said, the Japanese Government is also talking about distributing iodine to residents later. Fingers crossed it's nothing more than a precaution.

From what I've read, the entire reactor containment building of reactor 1 was utterly destroyed, and Caesium and Iodine has been detected outside, so apparently a meltdown is either happening or Has happened.

Umm... would 750 rads be considered deadly? I'm quite worried right now, in Vancouver >.<
