I was reading this article in Game Informer recently and it made perfect sense.
Which I completely agree with whoever wrote this article.

"Halo completely revolutionized the first-person shooter genre. Or, that's what you might think if you had your head up your butt for 10 years and hadn't touched a PC game since the original Doom. Here's yet another game that proves "greatmess" is more a matter of opinion. Sure, compared to Bloodwake or any other of Microsoft's dreadful early Xbox entries, this was a masterpiece, but the fact remains that Halo is perhaps the most overrated game of all time. Hey, do you like those levels? Good, because you're going to have to go back to them all again because Bungie couldn't manage to actually make a complete game. Halo also earns our ire for introducing the Needler, the lamest and most useless weapon since the spitwad. On the plus side, Halo's vehicles are a great way to experience what drunk driving feels like without risking your life on the freeway. Still not convinced? Let's not fail to mentions Master Chief, a faceless game hero so free of charisma that he makes Vice President Dick Cheney seem like David Lee Roth by comparison, or the story, which is insipid sci-fi boilerplate not fit for the script to an episode of Cleopatra 2525."

EDIT: P.S. It doesn't say who wrote this article and I have no idea who did so don't get all pissed and say that I was lazy, I typed this whole thing out.

i agree halo is overated, but that article is just taking the piss, it really isn't that bad, infact its still pretty good (just not as good as everyone makes it out to be)

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the worst game ever, 10 being the best game ever) I'd give Halo a 4-5. The 4 because of everyone saying "ZOMG! Halo is teh r0xx0r!". It's definetly NOT up there with Half-Life, that's for sure. It's just too hyped up. To me, the first great console shooter was Timesplitters.

Half-life... ha i laugh at that i know people that have never herd of half-life and i live in new york, all those people know about halo though, i agree that it is over rated and the needler is not useless if you have duel you can make enimes blow up, i belive its very useful that is if your smart i would give halo a 6 not sure why but thats what i think it gets. It would have been better if they added more levels more characters and more multi-play models. The multi-play maps could so with a make over i must say also, and the bad driveing for the warthog...well he just proved the point of that, its fun to be a reckless driver running over things no matter what they are, not in real life of corse, and if you think that makes people go out and run over things with there car well go blow it out your ass because it isnt, i blame alchohal and certain types of music for that and drugs. Halo is over rated yes but its one of the many ways our economy works.

People haven't heard of half life but have of halo because halo is so overrated and overhyped.

And nobody blamed halo for drunk driving, somebody just simply, truthfully stated, that the handling in the vehicles SUCK.

i just sayed why it was over hyped, my god its like im not typeing anything, here ill upper case it for you...ITS THE WAY OUR ECONOMY WORKS COMPANY OVERHYPES STUFF SO IT WILL SELL. and once again READ it helps i even addmited it was over rated, and the bad handeling for the warthog, puts a liitle more fun into the game, how would you like driveing around in a humvee that didnt slide or anything i would say BORING.

I used to like Halo. Then Halo 2 came out and killed it all for me and I realized it was over rated. But the best first person shooter was, for it's time, 007 Goldeneye.

That's the entire sentence, either you misunderstood, or didn't read it all, it doesn't say anyone is drunk, basically says the handling sucks.

as red power. He didn't say that driving the warthog makes ppl go out and drive like that he is just saying that its fun to drive like that in a game but it wouldnt be if someone would do that in real life. And Halo's online is just like any other online game. What sets it apart so much? Eh? There are still glitches, still noobs, and still the bastards. So no, online is just like any other game.

I think the main thing people think Halo is much more different is that you have a shield... as a human... and it regenerates which makes the online play "alot more fun."

In conclusion: Halo is a mediocre FPS game with standard gameplay and graphics, just a hell of a lot of hype.
