The reason the plugin stops working is because Chrome dropped support for Manifest V2. Edge are expected to follow suit, so it will break there too.
I've not been keeping a close eye on it because I don't use any plugins that are effected, but from what I understand Vivaldi and Brave have said they will carry on supporting Manifest V2.
There are also non-Chromium browsers, i.e. FireFox based browsers. Like I said the other day, FireFox have recently said they're selling your "anonymous" data, so I perhaps wouldn't recommend FireFox itself, but there are many forks of it. I personally use Zen Browser. It's still in beta, so a little buggy, but I really like it.
