That stereotype would be fine if it wasn't actually worse the other way around. The phonetics of Chinese are a lot harder for Europeans than English phonetics are for Chinese, primarily because of how ridiculously tonal Chinese is.

Chinese has an L sound as well by the way, it's not Japanese.

Only reason Dutch is a semi-valid prospect for me is I know decent amounts of German along with my English.

The Chinese have an L sound, but they mix them up because of some transliteration error or something. The Chinese people over here all mispronounce the L and R sounds .

That's mainly because the L is usually at the start of words, not inside. Still - they're a lot better at it than Japanese and Koreans.

Tbh I think a big part may be the trouble native English speakers seem to have speaking foreign languages. I know French people who can pronounce more different sounds than most native English speakers .

It's not restricted to Mercans though, Brits have it just as bad or worse, and the Aussie we had here a while ago too .
