Old news, but this kind of shit really bothers me.

Why is it right to make fun of Christianity? But if somebody posts up a picture of a depiction of Muhammad (especially a humorous one), it is suddenly a terrible crime against Muslims?

Because if Christians did anything about being made fun of, we'd (including myself in this) all be persecuted for doing so. It's a lose lose situation. On one hand, we get made fun of, and on the other, we're chastised for defending ourselves.

Double standards, although a fact of life, are as retarded as the society that invented them. Might as well shove the politically correct in there as well, because having to be so is retarded too. The only reason we have to be "politically correct" is because a double standard exists. Heaven forbid someone's offended because THEY took something someone else said too seriously.

most people dont recognize the fact that all of us ARE different, in many ways.
that makes people not more or less worth, but saying "we are all equal" is just false.
even, getting offended by expressions that are not "political correct",
if they are not intended to be serious offensive, is as wrong as the expression itself.
(i know, there are situations in wich this is not correct, but its not the majority)

QFT. I had a drunk 50+ year old woman *physically* flirting and hitting on me at a party recently (I'm 22 and have a girlfriend). Anyone and everyone agrees that it was her just being stupid, and although I was uncomfortable, people just took it as just another person being silly. She was doing things like sitting on my lap, running her hand around my leg etc.. and it wasnt just me that she did it to.

Either way,, nobody really batted an eyelid,, she looked silly of course but nobody cared. Switch the genders though and wait for the sexual assault claims.


So where am I going with that? As much as a feminist would claim otherwise, men are percieved as the more dominant, controlling group, and thus should be more tolerant of offensive behaviour.

Switching genders, a 22 year old girl would be justified in kicking the bloke in the nuts and running off. If I kicked the woman in the crutch though, i'd be seen as an asshole.

And so,, while sharing no love of any particular religion, the perception is that christianity, as the dominant, more controlling religion (at a global level),, 'should be more tolerant of offensive behaviour'.

The hypocrisy is that offensive behaviour often puts it's target into a minority position, so you lose either way. The only way out is to play up the victim role.

It's why I'm sometimes unabashed in taking up a discriminatory stance,, for example, giving a bloke at the grocery store a heavy lifting job, while giving a girl a light-weight job. Wherever you look for 'what's best for everyone', you'll always find discrimination, and religions would claim to be 'whats best for everyone',, but then again what group, religious or not, would claim otherwise?

While being protective of a belief is perfectly justified (heh, just gotta read some of my C&C posts for that ),, tolerance is a one-way street which leads to discrimination. Too often discrimination is seen as a bad thing,, but consider this:

Isn't it discriminatory to provide a carer to a disabled person? Disabled people are encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities, and when that fails, the carer helps them. Where is my carer to finish the job when my best efforts fail at a task I've set myself?

Sure, it's a ridiculous situation to concieve, but it's discriminatory for an expectation that a person to vacate their seat for someone with a disability. It's the right thing to do of course, but for a society moral to expect it makes it a discriminatory society. If you are able bodied, you are expected to vacate the seat.

Coming back to the topic though,,, is it tolerance where one group appreciates that they shouldn't insult another group, or is it an intolerance in that the group being insulted *doesn't* tolerate being insulted?

I'm not saying either group is right, but the portability of that statement shows that tolerance is just reversed intolerance, and vice versa.

it's one of those things the English gave the americans, the only nation who you can truely insult is the English. On the internet some people will say the US but you guys get terribly offended.

Also i wouldn't bloody dare take the piss out of Islam, the religion has extermists like any other but theres no way that i'd get me and my family blown up by insulting the Pope.

We have a similar issue with Scotland, they hate us, for 1700 years we had wars and now we have had 300 years of treaty in The Union. However the English are 85% of the union and 95% of the GDP, we pay for Scotland, but no-one says its wrong for them to hate us.

They take offence but blowing people up to make that offence is not something the Christian excel at.

Most of the time i am tolerant but on this point i absolutely hate the Islamic community for its double standards. Thats right i used the word HATE. We had a Muslim Artist in India making nude painting of Hindu goddess the guy barely got into trouble but if a Hindu had painted Mohamed naked (forget naked if he would have just made a illustration of Mohamed as a normal guy) he would have have had his head cut off/blown up/shot. Point being that Muslims are getting away with a lot of crap that people from other community would not have been able to just because they use the excuse of extremist.

Some extremist Muslims here in Australia believe that the country is theirs - they think they have greater right of the land than Australians. They try to force all eateries in the country to only sell and use Halal meat. The Mufti of Australia made comments calling Australian women who do not wear veils "uncovered meat".

That is so true. I swear Australia is a joke country atm... All the time you see foreigners on the news complaining about how we're so intolerant or whatever, yet if we went over to their country and did the same we'd probably be stoned to death.

Far as I'm concerned if you move to a country you should conform to their standards, within reason.

To bring in a small vestige of balance for a moment, Christian extremists are actually just as bad, and worse still fundamental Christian groups actually hold quite a lot of sway where certain political groups are concerned.

While I've lost the paper and such, can't quote the source (though I'm sure my heavy-socialist housemates would back me up), a newspaper was distributed by,, well,, I wont say pro-government, but certainly an anti-socialist/green group which went to such lengths as to say things such as:

1. The greenhouse effect and global warming was false.
2. Environmentalism is a pursuit spawned from the Nazis.

Research into this group found them to have their roots in (surprise surprise) fundamentalist christian groups, and the leader of the originating group is also on-record as having said "Women feel discriminated against and downtrodden by society because their genitals are closer to their rectum". I mean, wtf.

But bringing this back to my original points, it comes back down to tolerance. However, it's always been my belief that a tolerant society will always be downtrodden by those who have the courage and aggression to stand up against others and have no respect or tolerance for their ways.

People who dream of 'fairness for everyone' are quite honestly in a pipe dream because they refuse to disadvantage, discriminate or otherwise bear down upon another, even when this is being done to them.

And that makes you the odd one out, and frankly, deserve to make fun of. Uptight people always get made fun of and ridiculed. If you don't want that to happen, be more flexible about it. As long as you have a right to not tolerate ridicule, we have the right to ridicule you. It goes both ways, really.

Respect comes from mutual respect. Respect both those with you and those not with you. Everyone is the same in the end, and letting differences divide us is just stupid. Be tolerant of other people's shortcomings, and we'll be tolerant of yours. The harder you scream, the less you'll be heard.

And rather than complaining about ridicule, exercise your right to do the same!

Like I said, I have and I've been punished for it...

Hell, even our school: you are not supposed to represent your religion. I nearly get in trouble in all 8 of my classes for wearing a necklace with a silver cross with a Jesus head on it. And yet, there are some 20 or so Muslim women that wear a shawl (that's the right term, right?) over their head the entire day.

Both are ways of claiming religion, but of course, only one is said to be wrong.

I just don't get it, not at all. Nobody accepts it when I put out such ideas, but they all agree...
