Too right. These old units you mention will always be associated with C&C but let me ask, are there any units in RA3 which'll be remembered in the long run? What would they be? Freaking Bullfrogs? Mecha Tengu? Cryo-Copters? These ain't iconic. Even today, people are still familiar with quotes from the TD-Commando or Soviet tanks in RA2. I seriously doubt that anyone will actually remember whatever the hell King Onis used to say in a few years. Perhaps they don't want people to get too attached to the game because they might end up playing it even AFTER the release of their next rushed-in-18-months project or, I dare say, even mod the old game rather than buying the newest one.

Not to mention people are still stuck playing Starcraft while Blizzard decides what they're going to do with Starcraft 2, so by now you'd think they'd be a bit familiar with the units

If someone had told you 'Hey, for our upcoming revolutionary strategy title, we're going to put generic dual-barrelled heavy tank #8345 and a tower and a tank that shoots lasers at people' in 1995 or 1998, would you have been impressed? Probably not. Time has made these units classic and I am personally sure that this will apply to current titles as well. In ten years' time I think that there are designs, such as the Shogun Executioner and Bullfrog, that will be remembered for their sheer nerve and tongue-in-cheek design if nothing else.

Not only likely, I'd say by far the most probable explanation. Either that or it may not be a unit at all (it's possible, though unlikely, that it's simply a hovering building).

Totally agree. Something is rarely classic or iconic overnight. I doubt there are many people here that had access to a CnC forum during the days of RA1 to be able to openly discuss the status of these units and if they did, they didn't have the wealth of knowledge that we all do now on RTS game design etc to criticise it.

I think it maybe the Steel Ronin production building. The artwork in the BCP vid shows a floating head, strangely similar to the Steel Ronin chasis. Logic says this is where they'll be built.

The great thing about Starcraft is that a lot of the units in it have become iconic, if not by virtue of the designs themselves, then the game.

All of those units you've mentioned only became iconic after a period of time... years, even.

Back in the day when I was playing what is now referred to as Tiberium Dawn the thought did not occur to me that "unit x is iconic".

To support this claim, it is evident now after a few years that units from Generals are becoming iconic. These things take time.

The difference is, it seems, that the older units were actually given TIME to become iconic. How many years have passed between Generals and Tiberium Wars, three, four? Now it's just new game - x pack - new game - x pack - new game - x pack with merely a YEAR between each release. The majority of players will usually move on to the next game as soon as it comes out which is why today's units might have a hard time becoming iconic because we're barely given a chance to get fully accustomed to the game because it won't take long before we're being pushed to buy a new one, a temptation which succeeds in most cases.

Hmm, perhaps so. Though it'd have to be quite some unit to require a dedicated production building.

Not really. With Red Alert 1, they released not one but two expansion packs in 1997, and a third one after that. Admittedly there was some lag time between the initial release and the expansion but that's really the exception and not the rule.

I think it's still a different story with expansion packs. As the name suggests, these merely serve to expand the original game with additional content. Not counting expansion packs, there are about two years between entirely new games which still isn't much. Just see how long it takes to make a mod. If the bigger part of the game's community just moves on as soon as there's a new title, the mods of the older game lose a lot of attention which means less interest which then means less progress, followed by stagnation which eventually leads to a cancellation of the project because there are only a few people left who would actually play the mod. As for the thing about iconicity, I think this is just a bit of restrospective nostalgia. When you first play TD, you'll say 'Wow, those Mammoth tanks are cool'. A few years/games later, you'll look back at say 'Wow, those Mammoth tanks were iconic'. To me, iconicity is just a nostalgic addition to what you'd call 'cool' when it's still new although I'm well aware that these definitions may vary depending on who you ask.

The resemblance is indeed uncanny, and being the self-professed geeks that the team are, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was intentional.

The first image that you post with that unit makes me think of Rocketeers... But when you say it that way, I felt like this unit will be Rocketeers+Chrono Legionnaire or Rocketeers with Cyro gun.. Who knows?...

I think it's gyrolegionary (gyro as in gyroscope, suggesting a gyro-stabilised flying system, or a fancy word for Rocketeer). Having another hovering cryo unit would be kinda redundant even if it could land.

its confirmed as cryolegionary in EA store but maybe this unit has a different use for cryotech, who knows
