AIM-120 AMRAAM on an F-16 is some kind of pwnage for sure. Unless it's flying against Naval or Marine aircraft/pilots, in which case it is some kind of pwnt. Because the USAF is just bad like that :D

Yeah yeah, we know by now. One Marine platoon could take on the rest of the US military half naked with one arm tied behind another's back, armed with a half-burnt matchstick and a rubber band, and win. :D

Probably.
</sarcasm>

@Foxhound: That matchup would probably go to the pukes, because the USAF is just bad like that. As awesome as the F/A-18 in all its glorious variants is, it of course can't hold a candle to the F-22 in air superiority engagements. The F-22 is so user-friendly and automated, a 14-year-old could probably figure out how to work an F-22 well enough to win an aerial engagement given a 20 minute class on basic aviation concepts. Says a lot for the skill required to operate.

There is this thing called the F-35 too. About the same as an F-22, just smaller (and for the Marines, S/VTOL capable and without an internal gun).

God PFC, whats up with this hate at all other branches? We get that the Marines are tough! And in all honesty, I could probably fly an F-22 without too much trouble. Its that landing part that might be tricky.

*sigh*

1) Foxhound: The F-35 isn't on par with the F-22; the F-35 is the next-generation replacement for the F/A-18 and the A/V-8B, the first of which is a multirole and the second of which is a strike aircraft. It isn't designed to take on the likes of the F-22 in aerial combat. And the F-35 is still harder to fly than the F-22 because VSTOL aircraft have inherent challenges and considerations that normal aircraft don't have.

2) Swim: You don't know many Marines, do you? That's just the way we are. Don't take it personally or really even seriously, talking shit about the other services is just what we do in the military in general, not just the Marines. There are plenty of soldiers/sailors/airmen that talk shit about the Marines. It's normal and natural and if you let it bother you, then that's on you. Of course I realize that each branch of the military has its role, and is - and I'm being serious right now - if not really good at what they do then at least better than most other armies. And your last sentence totally validified my previous, half-joking comment. I didn't mention anything about the physical ability required to withstand the high Gs you'd pull in aerial combat, and there aren't too many 14-year-olds who can do that, even though they may be mentally capable.

3) Strategia: 3alpha- Yes, the AAV-7! 3bravo- (6th pic)That is a BIG-ASS GUN!

4) Niddy: Haha, yes, it is

I am deeply saddened that no-one, absolutely no-one, has yet mentioned the single most awesome-looking aircraft in the history of the world. See attachment. Ummm... it won't attach. Any ideas why not, anyone?
(Warning! High-resolution images approaching! 56k internet users take cover!)

The speed, manoeuvrability and stealth of a 5th generation fighter jet combined with the greatest bomb-carrying capacity in the U.S. Air Force (yes, even more then the B-52). Variable-geometry, powerful radar and electronic warfare systems. And you just can't beat it for looks. Ever. I will die before you convince me otherwise. If I were ever rich enough to get a business jet, I would buy one of these and convert its bomb holds. You can keep you Learjets.

Edit: Or, if you're into the classic side of things:
http://unsd.macrossr.../iowafiring.jpg
Some people say the Bismarck, some say the Yamato & Musashi, but I reckon the Iowa-class were the probably the most balanced and powerful design in battleship history.

Edit 2: I have a whole folder of several hundred pictures of mostly modern military equipment on my computer, so I thought I'd pull out some of the cooler ones.
Attachment 1:

The most evil-looking SAMs in the whole wide world. They may be old, but the S-125 Pechora (known by their NATO code name, the SA-3 'Goa') are still deadly. So long as you're flying an aircraft with a 60's era or no countermeasures, anyway.
Attachment 2:

The most evil looking modern SAM, the Starstreak High-Velocity Missile. Not strictly for AA use, it can also be launched at ground targets or whatever you like really, but it only tracks aerial targets. When it gets close enough to a target, the missile launches the three laser-beam riding submunitions on the front, maximising hit probability.
Attachment 3:

Seriously, who doesn't like a T-90 catching air?
Attachment 4:

Probably the world's best SAM system the S-400 'Triumf'. It can even reportedly engage ballistic missiles, but if you're an enemy bomber, and if this thing sees you, you're dead.
Attachment 5:

Talk about sci-fi - the RQ-3 'Dark Star' experimental UAV. It barely even looks real.
Attachment 6:

See those dots near the bottom of the column of water? They're battleships. Mmm-hmm. I don't know about you, but I'm kind of glad I wasn't around in the 60's. This was a shallow-water test detonation of a hydrogen bomb, code-named 'Crossroads Baker'.
Attachment 7:

Mil's Mi-26 'Halo', the largest flying helicopter in the world. It has been described as a 737 with rotors. And it looks awesome, too.
Attachment 8:

The 2S7 Pion, the largest full-tracked, regular-service piece of self-propelled heavy artillery in the world. Mounts a 203mm gun and can fire over a pretty insane range. Anyone who's played World in Conflict as a USSR Support player must surely love this thing as well.
Attachment 9:

There has been some speculation that this photograph may have been doctored, but combined with the next couple of pictures I hope to give you an idea of the sheer scale of the world's largest ever submarine, the Typhoon (and confusingly, in Russian, Akula)-class nuclear ballistic missile submarine.
Attachment 10:

Attachment 11:

They are as large as World War II aircraft carriers, and contain a double hull inside the exterior shell. They carry enough missiles that if they had a full warhead load aboard, which of course they never do these days, they could effectively make most of the planet Earth unliveable with a single salvo. They also reportedly have a sauna and a swimming pool aboard.
Attachment 12:

A beautiful shot of the ultimate fighter in the 'Flanker' series by Sukhoi, the Su-35BM. No, it can't go head-to-head with an F-22, but damn, it looks cool.
Attachment 13:

Now, I may get a bit of flak for this, but I reckon these are better than the A-10C Thunderbolt II. While they may not have a GAU-18 Avenger, their 30mm cannon is a lot more accurate over a much longer range, they are far more agile and they can carry a huge load of weaponry as well. It's the Sukhoi Su-34 'Fullback' strike bomber.

Found a few more...
Probably the world's most powerful and agile attack helicopter, the Kamov Ka-50-2 'Alligator' is an upgrade to the Ka-50 'Black Shark/Hokum'. Modified to support a twin-crew cockpit it is far more capable than its predecessor as the single pilot previously also had to be responsible for weapons operations at the same time, creating a massive work overload for the poor guy. With slightly upgraded systems, the Ka-50-2's dedicated gunner position improves results, both on weapons operation an piloting, dramatically. It's not as all-weather or night-fighting capable as the AH-64 or Mi-28N, however, so it was passed over in favour of the latter in the bid to be adopted as Russia's newest attack helicopter. That said, Kamov still cranks them out, and they are used for both export and supplementing the Mi-28N in regular service.

MOAB, "because even though we have precision-guided munitions to blow things up efficiently we want BIG BOOM." Look at the ute/pickup next to it for scale.

It may have been passed over by the Canadian Army in favour of older but decidedly more conventional (and better protected) Leopard 2A5 tanks, but I still haven't found a cooler-looking piece of fire-support weaponry that the M1128 Stryker Mobile Gun System.

It's a long-running debate which is never going to be solved because we don't have all the facts, but my personal favourite main battle tank is the battle-proven and extremely-well-protected M1A2 Abrams, now being upgraded to M1A2E standard with the Tank Urban Survival Kit, and a couple of other features I now forget.

The Common Land Anti-air Weapons System (CLAWS) HMMWV mobile air-defence unit - basically an Avenger with AIM-120 SLAMRAAMs (Surface-Launched Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles) mounted on the back instead of FIM-92A Stingers. "Because whenever the U.S. Army comes up with something new, they ALWAYS put it on a Humvee first." (Sorry whoever said that wonderful quote, I can't remember who you are.)

The Goalkeeper Close-In Weapons System mounting - basically a Phalanx with an A-10's 30mm gun on it instead of a 20mm Vulcan like the Phalanx. It can fire an awfully large weight of shell at a frankly scary ROF.
